Types of Dentures
Full Dentures (Complete Dentures): Replace all teeth in the upper arch, lower arch, or both. Full dentures rest on the gums and are held in place by suction and natural oral anatomy. They are removable for daily cleaning. Full dentures are appropriate for patients who have lost all of their teeth or whose remaining teeth cannot be saved.
Partial Dentures: Replace one or more missing teeth while preserving the remaining natural teeth. A partial denture consists of prosthetic teeth attached to a gum-colored base, connected by a metal or flexible framework that clasps to the natural teeth for stability. Partial dentures are removable and fill the gaps left by missing teeth, preventing the remaining teeth from shifting.
Immediate Dentures: Placed the same day teeth are extracted so you never go without teeth. Immediate dentures are prefabricated before your extraction appointment based on measurements and impressions taken in advance. They serve as a temporary solution while your gums heal. After healing (typically 3 to 6 months), the denture is relined or replaced with a permanent conventional denture for optimal fit.
Implant-Supported Dentures: For patients who want more stability than traditional dentures, implant-supported overdentures snap onto dental implants for a secure fit without adhesive. Blakeney Dental Center can refer you to Charlotte Dental Implant Center for implant-supported denture options including All-on-4.
The Denture Process
Step 1 — Consultation: Dr. Bezawada examines your mouth, discusses your goals, and recommends the best type of denture for your situation. Impressions and measurements are taken.
Step 2 — Try-in: A wax model of your denture is created for you to try in. This allows Dr. Bezawada to verify the fit, bite, and appearance before the final denture is fabricated.
Step 3 — Extractions (if needed): Any remaining teeth that cannot be saved are extracted. If immediate dentures were chosen, they are placed the same day.
Step 4 — Delivery and adjustment: The final denture is placed and adjusted for optimal fit and comfort. Follow-up appointments may be needed for minor adjustments as your mouth adapts to the new denture.
Adjusting to New Dentures
New dentures require an adjustment period. During the first few weeks:
• Eating may feel different — start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides simultaneously
• Speaking may require practice — read aloud to yourself to adjust to the denture’s feel
• Minor soreness is normal — Dr. Bezawada will adjust pressure points at follow-up visits
• Saliva production may temporarily increase — this normalizes within a few weeks
Caring for Your Dentures
Remove and rinse dentures after eating. Brush dentures daily with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive denture cleanser — not regular toothpaste, which can scratch the surface. Soak dentures overnight in water or denture solution to keep them moist and maintain their shape. Continue to brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth daily. Schedule regular checkups at Blakeney Dental Center so Dr. Bezawada can examine your mouth and check the denture fit.
How Long Do Dentures Last?
With proper care, dentures typically last 5 to 10 years before needing replacement. Over time, the jawbone beneath the denture changes shape (resorbs), causing the denture to fit less securely. Periodic relining — adding material to the denture base to improve the fit — can extend the lifespan. When the denture no longer fits well despite relining, a new denture is fabricated.
